Cocaine Anonymous: Cocaine Addiction Symptoms and Signs

This notorious white powder that cocaine is, has its origins in leaves derived from the South American coca plant. Leaves that were being freely used by the Mayans for their stimulating qualities became known to Europe following Spain’s conquest of that continent.

Described as a stimulant, cocaine can be ingested in many ways, be it smoking, injection into the veins, or what is called snorting via the nose. No matter how it is consumed, its effects of this highly addictive drug are the same. However, it is known that no fewer than 90 percent of the people who use it do so occasionally; it is only the remaining 10 percent that are known to be addicts, or those who use it at a frequency that is equal to or exceeds once a week.

Long Term Use of Cocaine: Effects of a Cocaine Addiction

Cocaine addiction is a serious problem that can cause short term and long term adverse, even irreversible effects on the body. The powerfully addictive stimulant affects the entire body, from the brain, the heart, lungs, and the entire central nervous system. Whether it’s snorted in powder form or smoked in the form of crack cocaine, the effects can be felt almost immediately. Short term effects for cocaine use include:

1) Increased Energy
2) Decreased Appetite
3) Increased Body Temperature
4) Increased Heart Rate
5) Increased Blood Pressure
6) Dilated Pupils
7) Alertness
8) Anxiety (in some users)

While the majority of short term effects don’t seem all that bad (who wouldn’t want more energy and mental clarity, especially with a job that requires long hours) but, due to the nature of the drug, these short term effects only last as long as the high itself – they wear off quickly, making the user want to continue using again and again which can lead to addiction.
