Freud first advocated the use of cocaine-but it fell from favor after the addictive qualities became known.

Next, Freud changed his tune on what he had found out. At first he said he had found out that all of his female patients had been sexually molested by their fathers…but the fathers were often paying for the female patient’s treatment.

Later, he admitted that some of the female patients had been sexually molested, but other patients he “inferred” their sexual abuse…from their dreams…and that is when he came up with a number of his theories of the conscious and unconscious mind, among others…

What did Freud use to help patients? He popularized the “talking-cure”–an idea that a person could solve problems simply by talking over them, something that was almost unheard of in the 19th century. Even though many psychotherapists today tend to reject the specifics of Freud’s theories, this basic mode of treatment comes largely from his work.

I was a psych major and I think Frued was an idiot. None of his theories were based on research of any note…he had 12 or 18 patients that he supposedly based his theories from…not exactly a wide selection.
